Biratnagar, January 9
Four cylinder bombs were discovered buried near the Malti Bridge in Sundarharaicha Municipality-7, Morang, during the expansion of the East-West Highway.
According to Morang District Police spokesperson DSP Bed Prakash Joshi, the bombs are believed to date back to Nepal’s insurgency period.
The District Administration Office in Morang received information on Thursday morning about the presence of conflict-era explosives near the Malti Bridge. After assessing the risk of detonation during excavation work for the highway expansion, teams from the Nepal Army and police were deployed for a search operation.
“During the search, four cylinder bombs buried underground were found, along with attached wires,” DSP Joshi said. “These are from the conflict era, and preparations are underway to safely dispose of them.”
Following the tip-off, authorities temporarily closed the highway to conduct the search. The bombs were located later in the day.
