Triumph debuted in Nepal with its popular 400cc bikes, the Triumph Speed 400 and the Triumph Scrambler 400X. Both bikes were officially launched in July 2023. The Speed 400 is a modern retro-styled roadster, whereas the Scrambler 400X is a modern-classic scrambler. Both bikes share most of the parts but differ in purpose and styling. The Speed 400 is more road-focused whereas the Scrambler 400X has off-road capabilities and touring ability.

The bikes are a possibility with the joint partnership from Triumph and the Indian giant’s Bajaj. The partnership has been quite successful with both the Speed 400 and the Scrambler 400X having sold 60,000 plus all over the world. The partnership is set to bring more bikes in the coming future.

Both bikes made their official entry into the Nepali market at the 2024 NADA Auto Show and instantly made a headline. Except for the styling and performance, the pricing has been a major factor in their popularity. Here we will see what the road-focused Triumph Speed 400 delivers in terms of specs.

Design

The Triumph Speed 400 carries the Triumph DNA with similarity to the Speed Twin 900. The front of the roadster features a round LED headlight setup with LED DRLS in a C-shaped. The Triumph logo sits in the middle of the headlight. The indicators are kept on the front suspension just the side of the headlight. The mirrors are kept on the bar ends giving a bulky roadster vibe and presence.

Coming to the side of the Triumph Speed 400, the tank has the Triumph logo on the sides and gives a muscular feel. The dual-tone theme on the tank also makes it look attractive. The single seat on the Speed 400 has comfortable and soft cushioning good for city riding and cruising along the highway.

The grab handle is a single piece which is connected from one side of the rear portion of the rear pillion to the other. The exhaust has a thump and bassy sound with a shiny silver finish.

The rear of the Triumph Speed 400 features an LED setup with LED taillight and indicators. The tail section is clean with the minimal use of plastic. The wide tyre profile also gives the bike a bulkier look.

The instrument cluster is a hybrid with both analogue and digital built into it. The analogue part displays the speed and signs for indicators, ABS, traction control, headlight, neutral and more. The digital part displays other information such as fuel economy, gear position, trip meter and RPM meter.

Performance

The Triumph Speed 400 is powered by a liquid-cooled, 398.15cc, single-cylinder engine. The engine delivers a maximum power of 40 PS at 8,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 37.5 Nm at 6,500 rpm. This setup provides smooth power delivery and responsive acceleration which gives a smooth performance in both city rides and highway cruising. The bore and stroke measure 89 mm x 64 mm, contributing to efficient power delivery. The 6-speed gearbox, paired with a wet, multi-plate slip clutch ensures smooth gear changes.

The frame is a hybrid spine/perimeter design made from tubular steel with a bolt-on rear subframe, offering solid structural integrity. The bike’s suspension is designed for comfort and control on different roads, featuring 43mm upside-down Big Piston forks with 140mm wheel travel at the front and a gas mono-shock RSU with an external reservoir and pre-load adjustment at the rear, giving 130mm wheel travel.

The braking performance of the Triumph Speed 400 is strong with a 300mm fixed front disc and a four-piston radial calliper, alongside ABS, while the rear features a 230mm fixed disc with a floating calliper and ABS for added safety. The cast aluminium alloy wheels, with 110/70 R17 tyres at the front and 150/60 R17 at the rear, enhance grip and stability.
