Kathmandu, December 19

After 20 days of shutdown against the government-sponsored Constitution Amendment Bill, which seeks to remove Hill districts from Province 5, districts in the Western Region of Nepal reopened for business on Monday. With normalcy returning, people are heaving a sigh of relief.

The general strike had hit labourers, small traders and patients the hardest. These people had been pressing strike enforcers to seek an alternative. Marketplaces, educational institutions, factories and industries have reopened in Rupandehi, Gulmi, Palpa and other districts in the West. Vehicular movement has also resumed.

Bhuwan Shrestha, coordinator, Joint Struggle Committee (Gulmi), however, said they have only changed the form of their movement.

He said rallies, assemblies and sit-ins will continue unless and until the government withdraws the Charter Amendment proposal.

What next?

  • The shutdown against the plot to divide Province 5 ended after 20 days on Monday
  • Bhuwan Shrestha of the Joint Struggle Committee, however, says only the form of the protest has changed
  • According to Shrestha, they will continue with protests till withdrawal of Constitution Amendment Bill
