Mustang, October 9

A total of 111.7 tonnes of fruit have been imported from China through the Korala border crossing over the past 11 days.

The Quarantine Office at Nhechung, Lomanthang-4, reported that the influx of Chinese fruit continued despite heavy rainfall and snowfall. Bandana Ghartimagar, a technical assistant at the office, said the imports included 87.3 tonnes of apples, 16.1 tonnes of mangoes and 8.316 tonnes of dragon fruit.

However, adverse weather conditions have completely blocked the Beni-Jomsom-Korala road since September 27, making it difficult to transport the fruit to its destinations.

The delay has raised concerns about spoilage, as the imported fruit has remained inside containers for an extended period.

Meanwhile, some dragon fruit transported in a container was distributed to locals in Jomsom, Mustang, on Thursday. Subas Sunuwar, a company representative, said the dragon fruit, valued at around Rs 2.4 million, had been saved from rotting.

He added that the transportation delay had also resulted in estimated losses of Rs 3 million.
