Kathmandu, September 20

Nepal’s ruling Nepal Communist Party has begun preparations to impeach controversial Justice at Supreme Court, Deepak Raj Joshee, after he reportedly denied repeated requests for resignation.

The party’s Chief Whip Dev Gurung has begun collecting signatures of its lawmakers for the registration of impeachment motion.

The constitution requires signatures of one fourth members of the House of Representatives to file the motion. The party has a majority in the House.

Earlier, leaders of the party had warned of impeaching KC, who was rejected by the Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee for the position of Chief Justice, concluding he was not qualified for the position. After that, Joshee was expected to resign as a justice also on the moral grounds.

Joshee also stayed off duty on a leave for around a month. But, he has joined the court after Om Prakash Mishra’s appointment as the Chief Justice.

After the registration of motion, Joshee will be automatically suspended.
