NCP warns of impeaching Deepak Raj Joshee

Deepak Raj Joshee attends a meeting of the Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee, on Thursday, July 26, 2018.

Kathmandu, September 18

Leaders of the ruling Nepal Communist Party have warned of filing an impeachment motion against the seniormost Justice at the Supreme Court Deepak Raj Joshee.

The leaders claim Joshee had agreed to resign after the appointment of Chief Justice Om Prakash Mishra. But, as he failed to keep the promise, the legislative will come forward to remove him, they warn.

Earlier, the Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee had rejected Joshee’s name for the Chief Justice concluding he was not qualified for the position. After that, Joshee was expected to resign as a justice also on the moral grounds.

Joshee also stayed off duty on a leave for around a month. But, he has joined the court after Mishra’s appointment.

It has been learned that Law Minister Bhanu Bhakta Dhakal and Joshee had agreed that the justice join the duty, but resign after a couple of days.

Leaders of the ruling party suspect Joshee dared to break the promise in cahoots with the main opposition Nepali Congress.

A source says the party may file the impeachment motion after its Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal will return home from China.

After the registration of motion, Joshee will be automatically suspended. The constitution says at least one fourth of the House of Representatives members can file the motion. Two-thirds majority can pass the motion.

The NCP commands majority in the House, but its government has garnered two-thirds support.
