Kathmandu, November 22
Dismissing rumours that the Malaysian Embassy in Kathmandu has resumed stamping visas for people who have already received confirmation from the employers, the Nepal government says efforts are underway to execute a labour agreement the two countries signed last month.
The government’s statement comes after two private companies, VLN and One Stop Centre, reportedly began collecting passports from those waiting for their flights. Earlier, the government had shut down the operation of these companies after they were found cheating the workers.
Upon receiving the reports that they resumed collecting passports, spokesperson at the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security, Narayan Regmi, issued a statement last night and said, “The government will issue a public notice about the resumption of process. Preparations are underway to finalise what have been agreed in the memorandum of understanding.”
It has been learned that Malaysia is planning to establish a new mechanism to facilitate the visa processing. The Kuala Lumpur government has requested one month’s time for that.
