The Mahasamiti meeting of Nepali Congress (NC), the major opposition party in parliament, has kicked off in Kathmandu.

According to spokesperson Bishwa Prakash Sharma, majority of representatives have arrived in Kathmandu for the meeting which will hold deliberations on five important documents.

“Around 1,600 representatives of Nepali Congress members from elected from 240 electorates have for the inauguration of the Mahasamiti meeting to be held tomorrow at Yagambar Party Palace in Kathmandu,” shares Sharma.

The five documents which were discussed by the party’s central committee will be presented in the Mahasamiti’s meeting tomorrow.

Sharma shared that NC Vice-President Bimalendra Nidhi will be presenting the political report while the party’s General-Secretary Shashank Koirala would be presenting the organisational report. General-Secretary Purna Bahadur Khadka is scheduled to present the statute amendment report while Joint General-Secretary Ram Sharan Mahat would submit NC’s economic policy and Party’s Treasurer Sita Devi Yadav the Internal Economic Report.

“As the meeting progresses, the Mahasamiti members are going to be divided into seven provincial groups to study and discuss the documents,” added Sharma.

Although Clause 20 of the NC’s statute mandates the Mahasamiti meeting to be held annually, this is the first Mahasamiti meeting held since March 2016.

The meeting is expected to address the differing views raised within the party.

Around 10 million is estimated to be spent to hold the Mahasamiti meeting. The expenses would be met by the Party’s internal fund and registration fees collected from the registration of the Mahasamiti members.

The meeting will conclude on December 18.
