Madhav Kumar Nepal rules out constitution amendment before provincial, federal polls

CPN-UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal is being welcomed by his cadres in Biratnagar, on Sunday, June 25, 2017.

Biratnagar, June 25

CPN-UML senior leader and former prime minister Madhav Kumar Nepal has ruled out the possibility of constitution amendment before conclusion of provincial and federal polls which should be held by January next year.

Speaking with journalists in Biratnagar of Morang district today, Nepal said the agitating Rastriya Janata Party Nepal would also participate in the polls without amendment.

He suggested that the RJPN establish its agendas among people through elections at various levels.

The RJPN, however, has been demanding the amendment at the earliest and the government also hopes to endorse it before the local polls in Province 2 scheduled for September 18.

But Nepal said the amendment should be made in consultation with all parties after the federal polls only.

Meanwhile, the leader clarified that his party would not object to the constitution amendment proposal if it was rational and acceptable to all sides.

In another context, he said Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and CPN-Maoist Centre Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal postponed the elections in Province 2 fearing the loss of their parties.
