Kathmandu, August 19
A writ petition has been filed at the Supreme Court demanding a ban on extracting and storing ova from women and adolescent girls.
The writ was filed at the Supreme Court after it was revealed that Hope Fertility and Diagnostic Pvt. Ltd., based in Babarmahal, had been illegally extracting and distributing ova from adolescent girls.
On August 17, advocates Nirab Gyawali, Ankita Tirpathi and Dhruba Bhandari, filed the writ against the Office of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Ministry of Health, Nepal Police, and others.
They argued that ova from women and adolescent girls should only be extracted and stored under proper laws.
“Until the final verdict of this petition is delivered, an interim order should be issued in the name of the respondents to ensure that ova are not extracted or stored from women and adolescent girls, considering the balance between the risks and benefits inherent in their reproductive health,” states the writ.
Similarly, the writ also claims that Hope Fertility’s illegal extraction of ovum constitutes a crime of human trafficking and demands an order in line with this consideration.
