Kathmandu, June 5

On the World Environment Day, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has made a solemn pledge.

Prime Minister Oli said at a programme that his government will abide by sustainable development practices.

PM Oli, speaking at a programme of the Ministry of Population and Environment, asked all to rest assured that his government will not launch development initiatives that will make life easier for present generations at the expense of future generations.

He said: Mismanagement plagues municipalities. And they stink. All this is because of the inability to use waste as a means of income. All sides should help the government protect the environment.

Sophie Kemkhadze, deputy country director, UNDP Nepal, noted that the last year was memorable for Nepal in terms of environment conservation, citing adoptio of sustainable development goals and signing of the Paris climate change agreement.

Individuals and institutions contributing to environment conservation were honoured on the occasion.

At the call of the United Nations, different countries have been observing the environment day since June 5, 1972. Schools and different organisations organised events to mark the day in Nepal.
