We are keeping an eye on justices handling tax cases: Law Minister

Sher Bahadur Tamang

Kathmandu, April 2

Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Sher Bahadur Tamang says he has kept an eye on Supreme Court justices who have been handling cases related to tax issues and deciding in favour of traders accused of customs violation.

The Minister hints that the ruling parties may charge them with impeachment if they are found acting against interests of the country in cahoots with the traders.

“Some recent decisions of the court disappoint you. If has been suspected that those accused of big-scale corruption, tax evasion and customs violation have been released from interim orders,” Tamang says, “But we will prove that the state does not let them walk free.”

In an interview with Onlinekhabar, Tamang says, “We are studying some interim orders. We will not spare them. They are watched by people, and Parliament.”

Many of such cases are still sub-judice and waiting for the final verdicts, and if final verdicts are also against national interests, the justices will be impeached, he warns.

“We will wait for the final verdicts. But, above them are sovereign people and Parliament elected by them,” he says, “Therefore, some cases connected to the court itself are under our scrutiny.”

In another context, he says he will control unnecessary foreign trips of justices and judges.
