Votes to be counted at voting stations, not in headquarters

Kathmandu, May 9

The Election Commission has said votes of May 14 local level elections will be counted at voting centres without bringing the ballot papers to the district headquarters.

The constitutional body says the decision was taken as transporting the ballot boxes might involve security risks.

“The counting will begin simultaneously in all 283 local levels and returning officers have been delegated the authority to make appropriate decisions about when and where to count votes,” the Commission spokesperson Surya Prasad Sharma informs, “No further decision is required on counting.”

The returning officers will coordinate with local political parties to arrange the counting, he adds.
