Violence erupts again in Bangladesh

Kathmandu, August 1

Violence has erupted once again between students and police in Bangladesh as protests over the government job reservation system continue. Over 200 people have lost their lives during these demonstrations.

The protests initially escalated when students demanded the removal of the reservation system in government jobs. The situation had temporarily calmed after the Supreme Court reduced the 30 per cent reservation for families of those who fought for independence against Pakistan to 5 per cent.

However, as students were busy meeting with the families of those injured and killed during the protests, violence broke out again in cities including the capital, Dhaka.

According to a report by the BBC, quoting an official from the northeastern city of Sylhet, protesters attacked the police, prompting a forceful response. The police fired dozens of rounds of tear gas to control the situation.

Despite the violence, students have continued their protests under the banner “March for Justice.”
