Kathmandu, November 26

The United Nations in Nepal has strongly condemned the alleged rape and killing of a six-year-old girl in Bardibas.

Issuing a statement on Thursday, the UN in Nepal has urged relevant authorities to urgently follow the due process and ensure that the guilty are held accountable.

The UN in its statement has called on the government, civil society and individuals to speak out and act to bring about the change within society.

A six-year-old girl was found dead in Bardibas municipality of Mahottari district of southeastern Nepal on Monday evening, which marked the eve of the 16 days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. A local shopkeeper has confessed to killing her under the influence of alcohol. Locals suspect that the girl was raped before being murdered.

Locals of Bardibas on Tuesday had staged a demonstration demanding action against the culprit. Police had resorted to firing in their bid to end the road obstruction imposed by locals. A man injured in the clash with the police, had succumbed to his injuries.

The UN also urged demonstrators and security forces to raise their voice responsibly and to show restraint to avoid a further escalation of the situation.
