UML’s Raj Bahadur Shahi elected Province 6 Assembly speaker unopposed

CPN-UML lawmaker Raj Bahadur Shahi has been elected the speaker of Provincial Assembly in Province 6 unanimously.

A meeting of the Assembly held in Birendranagar of Surkhet today elected Shahi to the top legislative position after no other member filed nominations.

Earlier, the UML and the CPN-Maoist Centre, which command the majority in the Assembly, had agreed that the Maoist Centre will take the position of Chief Minister and the UML will take the speaker. Accordingly, Maoist Centre’s parliamentary party leader Mahendra Bahadur Shahi is all set to take the position.

Province Chief Durga Keshar Khanal will administer the oath of office and secrecy to Shahi this afternoon.

Meanwhile, the Assembly decided to elect the deputy speaker on coming Saturday, according to the Assembly member Thammar Bista. As per the UML-Maoist Centre agreement, a Maoist Centre leader will claim the position.
