UML may let its two leaders become chief minister of Province 4 for 2.5 years each

L-R: Kiran Gurung and Prithvi Subba Gurung

Kathmandu, January 22

After two of its senior leader remained adamant on their claim for the position of chief minister of Province 4, the CPN-UML is preparing to adopt a middle-path solution by letting them become the chief minister for 2.5 years each, one after another.

UML Secretary Prthvi Subba Gurung and Standing Committee member Kiran Gurung are firm in their claim that they should become elected the chief minister. Therefore, a group of leaders including Rabindra Adhikari have suggested the party leadership that it adopt the rotational model and let each of them enjoy the position for two and half years.

A leader involved in talks with the party leadership in this regard says different factions of the party have already consented to the proposal. It is noteworthy that Prithvi is close to Chairman KP Sharma Oli and Kiran to Vice-Chairman Bamdev Gautam.

Though everyone has agreed to let them take the position turn by turn, who will be the first is yet to be settled. A source says discussions are underway on how the issue can be resolved. Possible options include alphabetical order, intra-party hierarchy or drawing of lots.

Both Prithvi and Kiran have been elected to the provincial assembly under the first past the post system from their home constituencies in Lamjung and Tanahun districts respectively.
