Transporters announce indefinite strike against decision to scrap their committees

Kathmandu, April 18

Organisations representing public transport entrepreneurs have warned of an indefinite strike against the government decision to stop registering and renewing their committees as nonprofit NGOs.

The Cabinet meeting held on Tuesday had made the decision, requiring entrepreneurs to get registered as for-profit private companies.

The decision aimed at ending the monopoly of certain committees on certain routes thereby obstructing free competition.

A day after the decision, the organisations held a press conference in Kathmandu to announce that they will not provide services from May 10 if their demand was not met.

The government, on the other hand, is preparing to suspend bank transactions of transport committees after stopping their registration and renewal so that they cannot manage funds for the protest.
