Kathmandu, May 23

Six mountaineers, who were returning to the base camp after reaching atop the Everest, have gone out of contact. Three of the missing are Nepali nationals and the other three are Indians.

Ghanashyam Sharma, spokesperson for the Ministry of Tourism, identified the missing Indian nationals as Paresh Chandra Nath, Gautam Ghosh and Subas Pal. The identities of missing Nepali climbers could not be immediately ascertained.

We received information about the incident on Sunday and immediately sent a chopper with rescue workers for their rescue, Sharma informed.  While climbing down, the mountaineers started dancing at an altitude of around 7,000 metres, celebrating the occasion, a source said. They got disoriented when the Sherpa guide alerted them that they will run out of oxygen if they don’t rush.

Meanwhile, at an altitude of 7,500 metres, rescuers have located Indian mountaineer Sunita Hazara. The copter-borne rescuers are trying to rescue Hazara using a rope, Sharma told Onlinekhabar, adding: We do not know about the condition of other missing climbers.
