These three persons quit high-profile jobs to contest polls, but lost

The Nepali Congress is faring badly as results from recently held provincial and federal parliamentary elections are coming out from various districts of the country. Among losing candidates of the party, these three people had ditched their high-profile jobs to contest the polls.

1.

Deep Kumar Upadhyay

Former Minister and Nepal’s Ambassador to India Deep Kumar Upadhyay announced his resignation in early October while he was at the mid of his four-year term.

The former lawmaker had apparently expressed a desire to come back to politics and his former party Nepali Congress had asked him to give up the diplomatic job for that.

Consequently, Upadhyay tendered his resignation and came back to Nepal from New Delhi. The party fielded him for the House of Representatives berth from Kapilbastu-1. However, he could not make it.

As per the results announced on Sunday, CPN-Maoist Centre leader Chakrapani Khanal defeated him by around 800 votes.

Govinda Raj Pokharel

Congress candidate for House of Representatives in the only constituency of Pyuthan, Govinda Raj Pokharel, also lost the race to Rastriya Janamorcha leader Durga Paudel.

Pokharel had contested the polls after resigning from the National Reconstruction Authority as the Chief Executive Officer. The difference between votes garnered by Paudel and Pokharel is more than 16,000.

The former Vice-Chairman of National Planning Commission was offered the top position at the post-earthquake reconstruction body by the Pushpa Kamal Dahal-led government after it fired then CEO Sushil Gyewali accusing him of incapability. Gyewali was said to be a loyal to the CPN-UML.

Indra Man Tuladhar

Then Chief Executive Officer of the All Nepal Football Association, Tuladhar, resigned few days before filing nominations to contest the provincial assembly polls as the Congress candidate in Kathmandu-9 ‘A’. He, however, lost to Ajaya Kranti Shakya of CPN-UML. Shakya received 9,531 votes to defeat Tuladhar, who was restricted to 7,193 votes.
