Kathmandu, October 10

The Inaruwa town in the Sunsari district of eastern Nepal has gone tense on Sunday as a man reportedly died in the custody of the District Police Office.

Whereas police say it was a suicide case, his relatives and locals have claimed he was tortured to death, resorting to a demonstration in the town and a clash with police. They say the family will not receive the body unless the responsible persons are punished.

Sanjaya Singh Thapa, the chief of the DPO, however, says CCTV footage shows it was a suicide case, hence the charge of the murder is baseless.

They also obstructed the East-West Highway. As the demonstrators attacked police, the enforcers had lobbed tear gas canisters.

Over 10 people have sustained injuries in the clash whereas some structures of the District Police Office got damaged, informs the office.

Mohammad Hakim Sah, a resident of Bhokraha-5 of the district, was recently arrested on the charge of indecent behaviours and was kept in custody as a further investigation was still underway.

Police personnel have been mobilised in a high number around the town to avoid any untoward situation.
