Student unions demand withdrawal of controversial amendment to Education Act

Kathmandu, September 25

Student unions affiliated to various political parties on Monday demanded that the controversial ninth amendment to Education Act be withdrawn.

The unions today met top leaders of political parties demanding their initiatives for the withdrawal.

In response, CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli said he would make efforts towards that end as demanded by the student leaders though his party does not hold majority votes in the House.

Likewise, they met Nepali Congress leader Bimalendra Nidhi with the same demand today. In response, Nidhi also said he would make positive efforts towards addressing the students’ concerns.

The student leaders say they will meet Speaker Onsari Gharti today itself to ask her not to forward the bill to the President for enactment.
