Kathmandu, April 16
A strong earthquake was felt across northern Nepal early this morning, with its epicenter located near the Nepal-China border. The tremor was recorded at Dinggyê County in Shigatse, China.
According to the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center in Kathmandu, the quake had a magnitude of 5.0 and struck at 4:05 AM. The epicenter was approximately 18 kilometers from Nepal’s border.
The Shigatse region, particularly Dinggyê County, has experienced repeated seismic activity in recent months. A 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck the area on January 7 (Poush 23, 2081 BS), followed by a 5.9-magnitude quake on March 6 (Fagun 24). Several aftershocks have since continued to rattle the region.
The January quake and subsequent major aftershocks caused significant damage to life and property in Shigatse.
Nepal is considered highly vulnerable to earthquakes. On April 14 (Baisakh 2), two earthquakes were recorded in Jajarkot district on the same day, highlighting the country’s ongoing seismic risk.
