Nepali Congress leader Krishna Prasad Sitaula says his party is strong enough to block the bid of Nepal’s leftist parties to lead the country towards communism.
In an interview with Onlinekhabar about the recent decision of CPN-UML and CPN-Maoist Centre to unify, Sitaula, who had played a key role to take the Maoists into Parliament from the armed struggle, says the Maoists are not reliable in such partnerships; hence the proposed unification might not take place.
“For me, the Maoists jumping from one side to another is not new. Earlier, Prachandaji [Maoist leader Pushpa Kamal Dahal] was with Oliji [UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli], but he came to the Congress side overnight. Now, he has gone back to Oliji, but can come back to the next side very soon,” he says, “I do not find anything strange and shocking here.”
Like some other leaders of his party, Sitaula says his party has not believed in the dream that the leftist leaders are hyping about the establishment of communism, but the party is only worried that it may add challenges to the peace process, which is yet to conclude.
“We are very confident that the Congress is ready to cope with all these challenges. If there is any group to protect democracy in the country, it is the Congress.”
The leader further claims that the unity between UML and Maoists will lead the country to another round of conflict.
“If you were for unity, you should have created the situation in which all parties could agree on an understanding. Otherwise, it was okay that all parties would walk their own paths,” he argues, “The UML-Maoist unification will destroy the possibility of an all-party understanding and people will get confused.”
“But, we will block it. We are strong enough for that.”
