Kathmandu, June 4

The government has set aside Rs 1.5 billion for the construction of Nepal’s second international airport in Nijgadh of Bara.

Experts say the allocated amount lower than expected for one of Nepal’s national pride projects.

The government had set aside Rs 1.2 billion for the project the previous fiscal year.

The airport has been dragged into a lot of controversies in the past year including disputes about cutting of trees and lack of proper plan.

The environmental impact assessment and land acquiring for the project have been complete. However, a lot more preparation is still required before the airport is constructed.

Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal states that even though the Cabinet has given it the permission to cut down the trees, it will take up nearly two years to finish site clearance.

However, the detailed project report is yet to be submitted to the government.

The project which was planned in 1994 has hardly had any progress in the last 25 years.
