Kathmandu, October 13
A group of rights organisations has urged the government to arrange temporary and permanent housing and announce a special livelihood support package for people affected by floods in Rasuwa, the Kaligandaki and Budhigandaki river areas, among others.
In a joint statement issued on Tuesday, six organisations said people displaced by the Rasuwa flood on August 26 had yet to receive adequate housing.
They called for safe temporary shelter for families whose homes were fully or partially damaged and who could not return to their settlements. They also urged the government to publish a clear plan for permanent housing, including standards, deadlines and budget allocations, based on the needs and preferences of affected families.
The organisations also demanded a special package for families who lost their jobs, businesses, agricultural activities, livestock and other sources of income. They called for cash assistance, employment opportunities, production resources, skills training and business recovery programmes tailored to local needs.
They further urged authorities to prepare and publish an updated, reliable record of deaths, missing persons, injuries, property damage, displacement and livelihood losses, while identifying vulnerable groups requiring special support.
The signatories stressed that recovery efforts should prioritise protection from gender-based violence, education, healthcare and social protection for vulnerable people, with meaningful participation from affected communities.
According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, the August 26 floods affected 32,963 people across Rasuwa, Dhading, Nuwakot, Gorkha and Chitwan districts.
