Kathmandu, August 26
Prime Minister Balen Shah has directed authorities to step up rescue and relief operations following flooding in Rasuwa and Nuwakot, with security forces and emergency response teams being mobilised in affected areas.
In a statement on Wednesday, Shah said the Nepal Army, Armed Police Force (APF) and Nepal Police have been deployed for rescue and relief operations. Additional personnel from other districts have also been moved towards the affected areas.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority has been activated to coordinate the response, while medical teams, Nepal Scouts and the Nepal Red Cross Society are being mobilised.
Shah said additional ambulances and medical personnel are also being sent to the affected areas.
Residents in downstream areas ordered to evacuate
The prime minister said Chief District Officers (CDOs) have been instructed to immediately relocate residents living in downstream areas to safer locations.
Authorities have also been asked to alert residents through SMS and phone calls and provide information about designated safe areas.
“All residents in downstream areas have been asked to move to safe locations immediately,” Shah said.
Helicopters kept on standby
Shah said all available helicopters have been instructed to remain on standby for possible rescue and relief operations.
Private helicopter companies have also been informed to keep their helicopters ready in case they are required for emergency operations.
A high-level meeting has been called to decide on further measures as the situation develops, according to Shah.
He urged residents to remain in safe locations and avoid unnecessary movement.
“If you are unable to contact your relatives, please wait for rescue updates from the concerned authorities,” Shah said.
The government has also provided 1234 as a contact number for information related to the disaster and relief operations.
