Rautahat: One injured as police, alleged extortioners exchange fire

Nepal Police personnel and a gang of alleged extortioners exchanged fire in Ishnath municipality-1 of Rautahat district, near the Nepal-India border, on Tuesday midnight. A member of the gang sustained injuries in the incident.

The injured has been identified as Chand Ali, 20. He is undergoing treatment at a hospital in the district headquarters, Gaur. The other two members ran away.

Acting on a tip-off that the gang was entering Nepal, the police had stayed alert in the area. When the trio came on motorbikes, the security personnel tried to stop them. However, the gang opened fire and police retaliated, informs the District Police Office. Police have confiscated a pistol and bullets from them.

The injured man has confessed that they were coming to Nepal to extort three businesspersons. He was also a member of a terrorist outfit named Tarai Madhes National, according to police.

At least four criminal cases are pending at the District Court currently.
