A day before the launch of the Mechi-Mahakali campaign, a cadre of the main opposition CPN-UML came under attack from UDMF cadres in Saptari district headquarters Rajbiraj. The incident points at a tense situation that has arisen in Saptari with UML bent on organising a mass gathering in the district as part of the campaign and UDMF bent on preventing the same.
On Friday in Rajbiraj, UDMF activists tarred the face of UML district committee member Pratap Narayan Chaudhary, who, among other UML cadres, were distributing pamphlets at Machha Hatiya, in a bid to make the campaign successful. After the attack, UML district secretary Shambhu Yadav and other leaders fled the scene.
Commenting on the incident, UDMF district coordinator Dinesh Yadav claimed that Madheshi peoples themselves had tarred the face of Chaudhary. Yadav maintained: UML has chosen to organise this programme even when Madheshi peoples were angry with it. This campaign has made them very angry.
On Thursday also, UML and UDMF cadres had clashed in Rajbiraj while the former were distributing pamphlets related to the campaign. But police arrived on the scene on time and brought the situation under control.
