Pokhara, January 28

Gandaki provincial government and Pokhara Metropolitan City on Monday launched a campaign to conserve the Phewa Lake, a popular tourism destination of the country, in Pokhara of Kaski district.

Gandaki Chief Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung and Pokhara Mayor Man Bahadur GC launched the campaign this morning.

In the first phase, they have begun removing mud and soil from the lake by using an excavator.

Last week, the provincial government had formed an 11 member committee under the leadership of Minister for Industry, Tourism, Forest and Environment, Bikas Lamsal, to implement a Supreme Court verdict about the lake conservation.

The provincial government has allocated Rs 100 million for the project. The city government has also added Rs 50 million to that.

The city government says around 20,000 cubic metre mud and soil will be removed from the lake in next few days.
