Province 1: Govt tables Manmohan University Bill, opposition protests

Nepali Congress lawmakers obstruct the Province 1 Assembly meeting in Biratnagar, on Sunday, September 22, 2019.

Biratnagar, September 22

The Province 1 government on Sunday tabled the Bill on Manmohan Technical University at the Provincial Assembly meeting amidst a protest launched by the main opposition party, Nepali Congress.

Chairperson of the Social Development Committee Sarita Thebe presented the bill including a report of her committee about it. Earlier, the full house had sent the bill registered by the government to the committee for a discussion.

While the opposition lawmakers were chanting slogans demanding that the government ‘correct’ the bill, provincial speaker Pradeep Kumar Bhandari called Thebe to table the bill.

Whereas the Nepal Communist Party’s government wants to endorse the bill from this session, but the opposition party wants to block that, demanding the provision about appointment of members of board of governors be amended.

On Wednesday last week, the party had obstructed the assembly meeting, forcing the speaker to adjourn the meeting until today. In these five days, the two parties held a few rounds of discussions in a bid to find an agreement but failed.
