Police Chief Khanal briefs parliamentary committee about Bhojpur encounter

Inspector General of Police Sarbendra Khanal briefed Parliament’s State Affairs and Good Governance Committee about the firing incident took place in Bhojpur on Wednesday morning.

During the committee meeting this morning, Nepali Congress lawmakers Dilendra Prasad Badu and Dila Sangraula had demanded that the committee be informed about the incident, which saw the death of two people.

According to Khanal, cadres of the Netra Bikram Chand-led CPN  started firing at police squad mobilised for security, hitting constable Sanjeev Rai in the process. The group’s Okhaldhunga district in-charge Nir Kumar Rai was injured in crossfire. Both of them were taken to a hospital, but were pronounced dead later.

Policeman Thamanath Bhattarai also sustained an injury to his shoulder. Khanal said that the team was deployed after Nepal Police received a tip-off about armed personnel hiding in the area.

“The armed group fired at the security team all of a sudden, forcing the police to take a retaliatory move.  Other two security personnel have been injured in the incident and are being treated at the District Hospital, Bhojpur,” informed Khanal. Khanal further informed that an additional four to five members associated with the Chand group were at large. “Further investigation into the incident is underway.”
