Police arrest 77 pickpocketers in Kathmandu

Kathmandu, December 19

Kathmandu police have arrested 77 people allegedly involved in pickpocketing under an operation that lasted for around 20 days.

Police officials deployed 50 personnel around the city to catch pickpocketers after city dwellers compalined of risiing instances of pick pocketing in the city. “In the last 20 days, we deployed 50 police personnel to attest 77 people involved in pickpocketing,” said SSP Basant Lama of Metropolitan Police Range.

Police say the 77 people, including a handful of women, were arrested red-handed as they tried to steal cash, mobile phones and jewelry from commuters. Officials say that the pickpocketers went out in groups of up to six and would ‘barricade’ commuters to loot their valuables.

“We recoverd around Rs 160,000 in cash from the pickpocketers, We also recovered 39 mobile phone sets, four ipads and five laptops,” he added.

Officials say that they will face burglary charges.
