PM Oli, Dr KC representatives ‘patch up’ at midnight; agreement ‘likely’ by the evening

Kathmandu, July 26

Members of a team representing medical education reform activist Dr Govinda KC told media on Wednesday evening that their talks with the government broke down as the government representatives were not ready to discuss real agendas.

However, they went to the Prime Minister’s residence in Baluwatar just half an hour before the midnight for a meeting. Sources sa, the meeting patched up two sides as Oli told Dr KC’s representatives that saving the fasting doctor’s life was the government’s first priority.

It has also been stated that if everything goes as planned, the government and Dr KC will sign a deal today and the fasting senior orthopaedic surgeon will break his fast-unto-death by the evening.

Dr KC’s team members Dr Abhishek Raj Singh and advocate Surendra Bhandari went to Baluwatar for the midnight meeting after Oli’s personal physician Dr Divya Singh Shah, also a supporter of Dr KC’s demands, convinced the PM to resume the talks.

During the meeting, the PM told them that the government would not withdraw the Medical Education Bill as it was already registered in Parliament, but maintained that he was ready to amend the bill so as to concerns raised by Dr KC.

The meeting assigned Dr Kedar Bhakta Mathema, Dr Dharma Kanta Banskota and Dr Shah herself to convince Dr KC on an agreement. On the other hand, the Nepal Communist Party parliamentary party’s deputy leader Subas Chandra Nembang has been assigned to accommodate them in the bill.

If the agreed plan goes well, Nembang will hold a meeting with Dr KC today itself and sign the formal agreement. Then, Dr KC will break his fast on the 27th day today.

Mathema among others held another round of meeting with PM Oli this morning in this regard.
