Kathmandu, December 26

Speaker Onsari Gharti has called a meeting of top leaders of seven parties at 3 pm on Monday as part of her efforts to remove obstructions in the Parliament and resume its meetings.

Speaker Gharti has called the meeting of top leaders of the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML, CPN-Maoist Centre, RPP, Federal Socialist Forum, MJF (Democratic) and Tarai-Madhesh Democratic Party at the Parliament Building in New Baneshwor in a bid to bridge the growing political rift.

The trust deficit between the political parties has only increased after the Prachanda-led ruling coalition tabled a Constitution Amendmenet Bill in a bid to appease Madhesh-based political parties.

Despite Gharti’s bid to bring the parties together, opposition parties, including the CPN-UML, have been obstructing the Parliament and staging street-based protests against the Bill. The opposition camp says the House obstruction and the street protests will continue till the government withdraws the Bill, something which the government says it will not do.

With the government and the opposition refusing to show flexibility, Parliament has postponed its meetings time and time again by issuing notices.

Speaker has called the next House meeting on Tuesday. A source at the Parliament Secretariat told Onlinekhabar: The seven-party meeting is a bid to convince the parties concerned to let House meetings resume.
