Oli takes charge as Nepal’s new Prime Minister

Kathmandu, February 15

CPN UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has been sworn in as Nepal’s new Prime Minister. Oli replaces the Nepali Congress’ Sher Bahadur Deuba under whose leadership Nepal’s Grand Old Party suffered an unprecedented defeat in the recent elections.

Oli assumed office later in the afternoon.

At a ceremony held at the President’s office Deuba handed over the reigns of the government to Oli symbolically by leaving the seat of the Prime Minister for Oli, who was administered his oath of office and secrecy by President Bhandari.

Oli has formed a three-member Cabinet. He has appointed CPN-UML leaders Lal Babu Pandit as his Minister for Population and Environment  and Thum Maya Thapa as Minister for Women, Children and Social Welfare. The Cabinet is expected to be expanded soon.
