Kathmandu, September 9

Newly appointed Chief of Army Staff of Nepali Army, General Purna Chandra Thapa, has assumed his office on Sunday.

Before taking over the leadership, President Bidya Devi Bhandari, who is also the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the military organisation, amidst a special function at the Sheetal Niwas, conferred the insignia of CoAS on Thapa.

Vice-President Nanda Bahadur Pun and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli among others were present on the occasion.

Earlier last month, the Cabinet had appointed him to the top position.

As per the tradition, his predecessor Rajendra Chhetri had taken an one month leave on August 9. Thapa was serving as the Acting CoAS since then.
