Nepal’s new ‘Living Goddess’ enters holy temple for first time

Kathmandu, September 28

The new Kumari of Kathmandu,  also known as the ‘Living Goddess’ , has entered her holy temple for the first time on Thursday.

Three-year-old Trishna Shakya, daughter of Bijay Ratna Shakya and Shrijana Shakya of Manjushree Mahabihar, was chosen as the new Kumari after her predecessor’s tenure concluded recently as she touched 12.

The new Kumari was brought to Hanuman Dhoka’s Mul Chowk. She will be introduced to goddess Taleju Bhawani at her shrine in Basantapur on Maha Nawami (Friday). It is believed that the Kumari, selected from among Newar girls, is the incarnation of Taleju Bhawani.

According to Guthi Sansthan, the government body responsible for the proceedings, the new Kumari will be given formal education at her new residence itself.
