Nepal’s local bodies commission members in mood to quit en masse

Kathmandu, September 29

Members of Nepal’s constitutionally-mandated local bodies restructuring commission are in the mood to quit following the government’s decision to modify its ToR.

This comes just days after major political parties reached an agreement to keep the ‘ilaka’ system intact when restructuring the composition of villages and municipalities. The agreement was forwarded to the commission, set-up in February as per the new constitution, following a Cabinet decision.

A member told Onlinekhabar that the government’s move was akin to changing the rules of the game in the dying moments of a football match. He said members are discussing how to react to the government move. “It took us considerable time and effort to come to a conclusion that there shall be 565 local units in Nepal. The government can’t just change our ToR now.”

He said members could resign en masse if the commission was forced to start its work from scratch.
