Nepalis will now have to get permit even to go work in India

Nepali nationals will now have to receive government permit to go to India for work.

Hundreds of thousands of Nepalis are believed to be working in India, with whom Nepal shares an open border. According to the Nepal-India Friendship Treaty, Nepalis have the right to work and own property in India.

Prime Minister Prachanda made the announcement at a programme in the capital on Tuesday. He said that Nepalis going to India shall receive an insurance cover of Rs 1.2 million. He said that if a Nepali national dies while working in India, the government will provide an additional Rs 150,000 to the kin of the deceased.

According to the new regulations, which will be implemented within a month, Nepalis who want to go to India for work will have to receive permits from the District Administration Office of the district of their domicile or the DAO from the border area.
