Nepalis’ labour migration to Malaysia: Govt seeks ‘calling visa’ details from agencies

Kathmandu, January 21

The government of Nepal has directed recruitment agencies of the country to submit details of people who have already received ‘calling visas’, which are confirmations from their employers about the job.

The move follows mounting pressure from the agencies to resume the halted migration process at the earliest. As the strongest ground of their argument, the agencies have been claiming that as 9,234 people have already received the calling visas and waiting for the visa.

The government, however, suspects that the number is made up. Therefore, it wanted to crosscheck the details, according to an official of the Department of Foreign Employment.

“We have also sought phone numbers of such workers because it is the government’s responsibility to make the process transparent,” the official says, “We will check each single detail to be submitted by the agencies.”
