Kathmandu, August 17

Over 100 Nepalis have escaped Afghanistan and arrived in Kathmandu this morning. They reportedly fled to Kuwait before boarding a chartered flight to return to Nepal.

The people were forced to evacuate amid the crisis looming over Afghanistan. They first reached Kuwait from Kabul by boarding a US Air Force flight.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs via a tweet confirmed that 118 Nepalis had arrived in Kathmandu via Jazeera Airways. The ministry also said that 134 people had contacted them on Monday evening and added that work was underway to bring them back.

A team of Nepal Army officials have gone to Tribhuvan International Airport to pick them up after which they will be taken to an isolation centre in Samakushi. They will be sent home shortly.

In a statement on Sunday evening, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kathmandu had called the Nepalis in Afghanistan to contact the ministry by filling up a form.
