The Federation of Nepali Journalists, the umbrella organisation of journalists in the country, is scheduled to elect its new leadership on Monday.

Voting to elect the new central committee will be held in Kathmandu tomorrow during the Federation’s 25th general convention that began today. Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba inaugurated the convention at Nepal Academy this morning.

More than 1,500 representatives of journalists will cast their votes tomorrow to elect the 45-member central committee comprising a president, two vice-presidents, one general secretary, five secretaries and one treasurer.

So far, three persons–Govinda Acharya, Tirtha Koirala and Ujir Magar–have announced their candidacy for the presidency.

Journalists’ organisations loyal to ruling Nepali Congress and CPN-Maoist Centre have formed an alliance in the FNJ election as well and fielded Acharya for the top post. Koirala is backed by an organisation of journalists close to CPN-UML.
