Nepal, Russia to sign military cooperation agreement

Foreign ministers of Nepal and Russia, Pradeep Kumar Gyawali and Sergey Lavrov, during a meeting in Moscow, on Monday, November 25, 2019.

Kathmandu, November 26

Nepal and Russia have agreed to sign an agreement on military and technical cooperation.

Nepal’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Pradeep Kumar Gyawali and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov made an agreement in this regard during their meeting in Moscow on Monday. “There are many good things about the agreement. We have decided to sign it soon,” Lavrov said after the meeting.

He, however, did not elaborate on the contents of the agreement. Instead, he said Russia would supply helicopters like MI-17 to Nepal as they would be very useful for the Himalayan country.

Meanwhile, Gyawali said Nepal was looking forward to Russia’s assistance in receiving a full membership of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. “It is important for Nepal as it believes that all problems can be solved through dialogues and mutual understanding.”

Nepal had obtained a dialogue partner status of the regional body in 2016.
