Nepal PM Oli: Had thought Covid-19 wouldn’t spread at this level thanks to Nepalis’ ‘strong immunity’

Kathmandu, May 17

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said he had not expected the coronavirus infection to spread at the current level in the country as he believed Nepalis had strong immunity.

Since the beginning of the pandemic in early 2020, Oli has been seen regularly talking about Nepalis’ stronger immune system, good climate conditions and rich Ayurvedic traditions that he says would help them protect from and defeat the virus.

However, speaking in a meeting in Kathmandu on Saturday, Oli reportedly said, “I had thought our immune system is strong, hence, the virus could infect some people but not at this level. But now, (I realised) a normal immune system could not resist this.”

Nonetheless, Oli still said there was no counterclaim that disproved the ‘stronger immune system’ in Nepalis. He hoped the traditional Ayurvedic medication could be helpful in stopping the virus from spreading inside the body.

Oli also confessed that the government could not ensure effective coordination among the concerned bodies in the fight against the pandemic.
