Nepal local election: Vote count starts, setback for UML likely, say observers

Kathmandu, June 29

Counting of votes cast during the second round of polling held on Wednesday has started in almost all civic bodies.

According to local reports, counting has started in Jhapa, Bardiya, Nawalparasi and Dang. Returning officers deployed in other districts have said counting will start soon.

The Nepali Congress and the Maoists are believed to have done well in the planes of Province 5 and hills of Western Nepal respectively. The presence of Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba in the Province 7 bolstered the morale of Congress supporters, observers say.

However, as early results come in, observers warn that it would be too early to draw conclusions.
