Lawmakers speaking in the Parliament on Tuesday urged the government to rescue victims of flooding in the Tarai and provide relief to them.

They pointed that there’s the risk of diarrhoea afflicting people living in inundated areas due to contaminated water. The lawmakers demanded free treatment for the victims.

The displaced people have not even got tarpaulins, they pointed. The lawmakers also asked Speaker Onsari Gharti to issue a ruling, directing the government to arrange shelters for the displaced people.

They criticised the government for lack of preparedness to deal with inundation, which affects Tarai districts during the rainy season every year.

Lawmaker Prem Suwal said dams and embankments unilaterally constructed by India have caused inundation in Nepal’s Tarai.

At the meeting, Prem Suwal, lawmaker from the Nepal Workers’ and Peasants’ Party, said dams and embankments unilaterally constructed by India have caused inundation in Nepal’s Tarai. He asked Speaker to convene a discussion on a proposal of public importance regarding this issue that his party has registered in the House.

Flooding resulting from incessant rains have rendered hundreds of families homeless in the Tarai. Lawmakers have asked the government to inform the Parliament about the number of families displaced and losses resulting from flooding.
