Vote counting begins in Dang, on Friday, December 8, 2017.Kathmandu, December 14

Nepal Election Commission says officials have finished counting votes cast under the Proportional Representation electoral system in 60 of the 77 districts.

According to EC’s Information System Management Section, a total of 7,684,328 votes have been counted as of 10.00 am this morning. EC Spokesperson Nawaraj Dhakal informed that CPN-UML has secured 2,631,991 votes followed by Nepali Congress with 2,546,069, CPN (Maoist Centre) with 1,045,446, Federal Socialist Forum Nepal with 351,525 and Rastriya Janata Party Nepal with 295,448 votes.

Likewise, Rastriya Prajatantra Party has obtained 175,590 votes and Bibeksheel Sajha has received 173,797 and Naya Shakti Party 69,241 votes.

Under the PR system, the whole country is treated as a single constituency and voters cast their ballot for the party of their choice. A total of 110 seats are allocated to the political parties using the Saint Lague method. Only political parties that received more than 3 per cent of the total PR votes cast across the country are included in the Saint Lague tabulation.

Going by the trend, the UML and Nepali Congress are likely to win around 30-odd seats while parties like Naya Shakti and Bibeksheel are unlikely to cross the 3 per cent threshold.

Counting is underway in Sunsari, Dhanusha, Saptari, Sarlahi, Mahottari, Kathmandu, Chitwan, Syangja, Arghakhanchi, Pyuthan, Surkhet, Kailali, Kanchanpur and Doti.
