Nepal, China agree to build inter-country transmission line

Kathmandu, December 27

Nepal and China have agreed to build an inter-country electricity transmission line that could let the two countries sell to and buy energy from each other.

A recent meeting of a bilateral technical committee on the energy made the agreement that authorities will launch a feasibility study for the building of such a line in their respective countries.

Nepal Electricity Authority says it made the agreement with State Grid Corporation of China. However, energy secretaries of the two governments will discuss the issue in their next meeting and make a final decision about constructing the line.

Earlier, China had been demanding that an investment modality be finalised before the feasibility study, stating China would not build the transmission line for Nepal as grant support. With the recent agreement, the two countries will first study the feasibility with their own cost and the funding of the building will be decided after that.
