Nepal backtracks on decision to tighten checks on vegetable imports from India

The government has backtracked on its decision to conduct stringent checks on vegetables and fruits coming to Nepal from India.

The government had decided to implement such measures two weeks ago amid complaints that vegetables and fruits from India were laced with pesticides. A source told Onlinekhabar that the government decided to backtrack on the issue after it received a letter from the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu. However, the government has decided to point to ‘lack of adequate preparedness’ as the official reason for postponing the checks for six months.

A source at The Ministry of Supplies says that the measure will be introduced again after necessary infrastructure is built to handle cargo coming from India.

The embassy had written to the government saying that the new policy adopted by Nepal was hurting Indian farmers and businesses.
